Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Pain After a Car Accident...Even a Minor One

A car accident does not have to feel “serious” to affect your body.

Last weekend, I was rear ended while stopped in traffic. The car that hit me was likely going less than 40 mph. At first, I thought I was lucky because the damage did not seem major.

But within minutes, my neck and the muscles between my shoulder blades completely seized up.

At first, I thought it was just stress from being hit. But the tightness stayed the rest of the day and into the next morning. I also developed a headache and felt stiff every time I turned my head.

That experience was a reminder that even a low-speed accident can create real physical stress on the body.

Why Pain Sometimes Shows Up Later

After a car accident, your muscles and nervous system react quickly to protect you. This can create:

  • Neck pain

  • Headaches

  • Shoulder blade tension

  • Jaw tightness

  • Mid back pain

  • Dizziness

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Fatigue

Many people expect broken bones or severe injuries after an accident. But most of the time, people deal with soft tissue injuries like muscle strain, joint irritation, and mild whiplash.

These injuries may not require X-rays or emergency care, but they still need treatment.

This is especially important for adults over 35, and even more during perimenopause and menopause, when recovery can take longer and stress can affect sleep, muscle tension, and inflammation.

even a minor car accident can cause major pain

What Helped Me Recover

I started gentle corrective exercises right away. This helped reduce the headache and improve some of the muscle tension.

Over the next few days, I continued:

  • Gentle mobility exercises

  • Deep breathing

  • Walking

  • Pilates arch exercises for posture and mobility

  • Massage therapy

I also had to temporarily modify my vision therapy exercises because the mild whiplash symptoms made certain movements aggravating.

Thankfully, I am feeling about 90% better now.

But honestly, I was shocked by how much work it took to calm my symptoms after what did not seem like a “major” accident.

It also made me think about what happens to most people.

Many people are told to “rest and wait,” but the body often needs guided movement and specific exercises to fully recover.

Why Early Treatment Matters

One of the biggest problems I see in physical therapy is delayed treatment.

Many people wait 3–6 months before getting help after a car accident. By then, the body has already adapted to pain and compensation patterns.

That can lead to:

  • Chronic neck pain

  • Ongoing headaches

  • Shoulder tension

  • Poor posture

  • Weakness

  • Reduced activity

  • Fear of movement

Early treatment helps calm the nervous system, improve mobility, and prevent long-term problems.

Simple Tips After a Low-Speed Car Accident

If you were recently in a car accident, here are a few simple things that may help:

1. Keep Moving Gently

Short walks and gentle mobility exercises are usually better than complete rest.

2. Avoid Staying in One Position Too Long

Sitting for hours can increase stiffness and pain.

3. Use a Lumbar Roll

A lumbar roll supports the natural curve of your low back while sitting. This can improve posture and reduce extra strain on your neck and upper back after an accident.

It is especially helpful if you spend time driving or working at a desk.

4. Watch for Delayed Symptoms

Pain, headaches, dizziness, and stiffness may show up days later.

5. Seek Treatment Early

You do not need a severe injury to benefit from physical therapy.

The earlier you address movement problems, the easier recovery usually becomes.

Why Many People Choose Care Outside the Traditional Healthcare Model

Traditional healthcare is important for emergencies and serious injuries.

But many people recovering from a car accident are left frustrated when imaging looks “normal” but they still hurt.

At 603 PT & Wellness, we focus on:

  • One-on-one care

  • Movement assessment

  • Corrective exercise

  • Strength and mobility

  • Long-term recovery

  • Preventing future setbacks

Instead of simply masking symptoms, we help people understand why they hurt and what to do about it.

This is especially important for adults who want to stay active, protect their bone health, continue exercising, and avoid long-term pain as they age.

Stay Active, Strong, and Resilient

At 603 PT & Wellness in Dover, NH, we work with adults throughout the Seacoast region who want to stay active and strong as they age.

Many of our patients come from nearby communities including:

  • Dover

  • Portsmouth

  • Durham

  • Somersworth

  • Rochester

  • Exeter

  • Greenland

  • Newmarket

If you are dealing with neck pain, headaches, stiffness, or tension after a car accident, getting the right treatment early can make a major difference in your recovery.

You do not have to wait until the pain becomes chronic to get help.
